Ecumenical Creeds

Some Christians today may boast that their only Creed is the Bible. Lutherans, in stark contrast to that notion, are decidedly creedal. We hold to the ancient Symbols (Creeds) of Christian belief. This in no wise diminishes in our view the rightful place of the Scriptures as the final authority on all matters of faith and life.

Christians in every age are required to make bold their confession of Christ, and this must be done in particular during times of testing that come from heresies that aim to divide God’s people and tear us away from the truth. Codifying our confession in clear terms, using natural language, and following the sound pattern of words given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit through the teaching of Christ and the Apostles and Prophets, allows us to proclaim the truth which protects those who would otherwise fall prey to the devil’s lies.
